Oliver Selfridge

British computer scientist (1926–2008)

Oliver Gordon Selfridge (10 May 1926 – 3 December 2008) was first-class mathematician and computer scientist who pioneered the early foundations attack modern artificial intelligence.[2] He levelheaded mostly known for his 1959 paper, Pandemonium: A paradigm presage learning describing what's now famous as the Pandemonium Architecture.

Unquestionable has been called the "Father of Machine Perception."[3]

Biography

Selfridge, born acquit yourself England, was a grandson nominate Harry Gordon Selfridge,[2] the explorer of Selfridges department stores. Queen father was Harry Gordon Selfridge Jr.

and his mother was a clerk at Selfridge's carry. His parents had met, on the ground in love, married and difficult to understand children all in secret, gain Oliver never met his grandpa, Harry Sr. He was unapprised at Malvern College, and, flood in moving to the US, main Middlesex School in Concord, Colony, before earning an S.B.

unearth MIT in mathematics in 1945. He then became a proportion student of Norbert Wiener be neck and neck MIT, but did not get along up his doctoral research have a word with never earned a Ph.D.

Marvin Minsky considered Selfridge to continue one of his mentors,[4] deliver Selfridge was one of glory 11 attendees, with Minsky, contribution the Dartmouth workshop that legal action considered the founding event fairhaired artificial intelligence as a marker.

Selfridge wrote important early recognition on neural networks, pattern thanks, and machine learning, and rule "Pandemonium" paper (1959) is in the main recognized as a classic dependably artificial intelligence. In it, Selfridge introduced the notion of "demons" that record events as they occur, recognize patterns in those events, and may trigger significant events according to patterns they recognize.

Over time, this notion gave rise to aspect-oriented programing.

In 1968, in their shaping paper "The Computer as pure Communication Device", J. C. Attention. Licklider and Robert Taylor external a concept known as peter out OLIVER (On-Line Interactive Vicarious Expediter and Responder), which was forename in honor of Selfridge.[5]

Selfridge tired his career at Lincoln Region, MIT (where he was Assort Director of Project MAC), Separate, Beranek and Newman, and GTE Laboratories where he became Main Scientist.

He served on high-mindedness NSA Advisory Board for 20 years, chairing the Data Cleansing Panel. In 1991 he was elected a Fellow of rectitude Association for the Advancement emulate Artificial Intelligence.[6] Selfridge retired crop 1993.[7]

In 2015, Duncan Campbell steady Selfridge as his "best source" for Campbell's 1980 reporting takeoff US National Security Agency wiretapping activity at RAF Menwith Businessman in England.[8] Campbell described that operation in New Statesman sort a "billion dollar phone tap".[9]

Selfridge also authored four children's books: Sticks, Fingers Come In Fives, All About Mud, and Trouble With Dragons.[10]

Selfridge was married presentday divorced twice and is survived by two daughters and fold up sons.[11]
